At its annual convention held in Greenville, SC the Women of the ELCA donated over $10,000 for books for the South Carolina Department of Education to use with their Summer Reading Camps. Students in Allendale, Jasper , Sumter, Williamsburg and Marlboro counties will be able to improve their reading skills. They will become the proud owners of a book that they can take home and share with their family. We can hardly comprehend what this means to someone in a family that does not have the time nor resources to enjoy what we often take for granted. The project supported the 2015 SC Synod resolution to be more supportive of public education.
Mt. Horeb’s WELCA Circles donated $300 for new books for the State Department and an additional $50 for new books and 340 “gently used” books for Lutheran Family Services. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this project “For the Sake of Children”.
During one convention workshop, the participants made 50 blankets to donate to Safe Harbor, a facility for abused spouses and partners. Other workshops included information on human trafficking, a Bible-related study on communicating and connecting with youth , including a dictionary of text slang, social media sites –either safe or dangerous — of which parents should be aware. Despite the laborious voting for Synodical officers and delegates to the Triennial Convention to be held next year in Minnesota, there was time to meet old friends and make new ones. We were entertained by Charlotte Hickman, a great story teller and sister of Bishop Yoos. We heard from representatives of Thrivent, Newberry College, Lutheran Family Services – Carolinas, The SC Lutheran Theological Seminary, Tanzania, Puerto Rico and a church-wide WELCA representative. Women from Latino congregations in South Carolina attended. They are eager to be a part of our walk in faith in His service.
